Oil gas mixture

I have a ‘60 Elgin 40hp outboard.

The manual says 20:1 fuel/oil ratio.

That seems pretty rich to me.

With new oil technology should I modify that to be
More lean?

While it's true that oil technology has improved since 1960, your Elgin 40hp outboard has old seals and gaskets that may not be compatible with running a leaner mixture.

Stick with the manufacturer's recommended 20:1 fuel/oil ratio to avoid any potential harm to the engine.

It may seem rich, but it provides this older engine with the necessary lubrication.

However, if you are really keen to modify it, please consult with a qualified marine mechanic first.
