jon boat
by: Craig

In North America they're called jon boats, suited especially for river travel since the current doesn't grab the V in the hull.

In Alaska they make them with a tunnel in the back that allows water to rise up further and the outboard can be raised also for traveling in shallow water.

Sampan
by: Timmynocky

The Sampan is a traditionally flat bottomed.
The name derives, apparently from a Cantonese word meaning three planks.

Traditionally these small boats were made using one plank for the bottom with the other two planks making up the sides.
