When I was a kid there was a dealer in Bartonville, Illinois that sold Chippewa boats and Firestone outboard motors.

They had 2 models, a Chief which was 14' long, and a Scout which was 12' long.

They were beautiful little boats made of marine plywood, painted white outside and clear varnish inside.

I remember there being quite a bit of flex in the hull due to light construction, but they were very nice.

Impressed me enough to remember them 70 years later.

I have a 1959 Chippewa Big Chief up for grabs if you come to get it. I have had it stored for a number of years and it will likely need a new coat of spar, but it is solid. Contact me at bjendro@gmail.com with a subject of Chippewa if interested. I will reply with pictures. I want to stop paying for the storage unit by the end of Oct, so it needs to go.

I had a 14' Chippewa with the fore deck in the mid to late 60's that my Dad found.

It had an old 10 hp motor with no reverse, a home made trailer and cost $250.

At the time I had a 12' flat bottomed row boat with a 6 hp Evinrude that we took the motor off of and put it on the "new" boat and dumped the old 10 hp junker.

Eventually I saved up the money for an 18 Evinrude that would do 27mph and run all day on 6 gallons of gas.

I've had a number of boats since then, but none that I've enjoyed any more than that one.

At 14 years old, that boat taught me responsibility and was a real taste of freedom as well.

I just bought a 1957 Runabout Chippewa.

It needs paint and varnish but mostly in great shape.

It has a 40 Johnson electric sea horse outboard and the C. S. Van Gordon & son logo above the speedometer.

I am looking for any information on the C.S. Van Gorden & son boat company and accessory items for sale, restoration information, paint colors of the 1957 boats and current OLD Johnson motor engine repair locations.

I have found little info on the web.

I was looking for a boat to make a display case out of and I found this one at a Garage sale near Portage, WI.

It still has it's last WI DNR sticker on it from 1978.

It seems to be completely original but am shocked at the Packer colors on the inside and the Badger colors on the outside.

The people I bought it from had the same intentions I did but just never got around to it.

It was very well taken care of and made a great addition to our house.

I had this given to me a year ago.

I refurbished it, strengthened it up good and put a 15 horse on it.

It runs 19mph. I love this boat!

I grew up with a Chippewa Chif wood boat back in the 60s.

I would run an older Champion 4.2hp outboard and would feel like you were really flying, especially if you would move up to the middle seat and allow it to plane out.

Does anyone know of the whereabouts of one of these vintage wood boats?

Built by C.S. Van Gorden and son in Chippewa Falls WI, and then moved to Eau Claire WI.

Boats were built between 1959 and 1962.

Call the Eau Claire chamber of commerce and ask for the lybrarian for limited information on the company.

You can web search Chippewa boats and get a print out of the models and years built.
