Cedar Boat Model - 1:20 Scale

by Garth
(NSW)

Hi All,

I am building a 1:20 scale, model boat, out of 18mm cedar boards (cross section), epoxy resin used to join the planks.

This is to be placed on the wall in my BBQ Area.

I have so far laid the boards and joined with epoxy resin.

I have cut out the general shape and is looking good.

I have started to shape and all joins seem to be very clean and fitted.

The main question I have is once I have completed what do I coat the whole boat in to protect it?

Well Garth,

It depends what you are protecting it against.

A coat of clear epoxy will protect the wood from moisture ingress.

But most epoxies don’t have any UV protection.

I should just treat it the same as you would for any other exterior wooden house parts, with either paint or varnish that has UV protection.

And if it is exposed to bright sunlight give it a fresh top coat every year to top up that UV protection.
