1954 Old Town Runabout

by Jim
(Bolton Landing, NY)

I brought this beauty home on Oct 23, 2016.

1954 OT 13'6" Cedar Lapstrake hull with 50s Mercury Mk25E (electric start).

I plan some minor DIY hull repairs over the winter before next season on Lake George.

I am looking for recommendations for books or online resources to help me learn wood boat repair.

I have basic wood working skills and tools.

Thanks in advance.

Nice boat
by: Don G

I always loved the looks of the mid fifties Old Town runabouts, I have a 1953 Lyman 15 center steer, which I restored.

My Lyman has a similar steering wheel that I bought many years ago and waited for the right boat to use it on.

It looks like your boat is in good condition, what do you think it needs?

The only tip I will offer you is to get to know the correct type of wood your boat is made from and only use that type to make replacement parts.

Good luck.

Looks good

I love the steering wheel.

I have a 1958 Runabout style too and am looking for a period wheel.

You're lucky to have such a great looking one already!

You could definitely do a lot worse than just reading through the pages on this this site.

This is a very good place to see other peoples opinions on various topics which if you sit down on a wet night with a glass or two of whatever will allow you to reach your own conclusion.

Remember if it all goes tits up, make absolutely sure it was your own fault
