18 ft Chestnut Canoe - Freighter

by Randy
(Muskoka Canada)

I am refinishing an 18 ft Chestnut Freighter, replacing gunwales, new canvas, the works.

The canoe did not come with a sail or outriggers and I am looking for the design plans.

Any suggestions on design or where to obtain them?

If you are looking for a cheap thrill try this Randy

I did it was a blast

I had a lot of white septic pipe around the yard

The out rigger I made from six inch thin wall, 90deg. elbows on the ends with black end caps.

Cross members width 4 inch, so you need six inch reducers, then two straight up to the gunnels with a 90deg. to the front cross member.

I put a black 'T' for the mast, six ft. black end caps.

Used bicycle tire to hold in place at the torts a jib, main sail.

Only used the jib, it was fast, two adults two children.

I was asked a few time if it was a production unit, no just a blast the children love it to sit on and stretch out on the hammock and fly without paddling, gulf island flyer.
